Sorry for the long response but overall the game is a blast and definitely worth your time no matter which version you try out. I remember playing this game when I was 5.
There’s the Wii and Wii U virtual console ports that are as authentic as it can get with only slight differences, the DS remake that is better in terms of content but worse in terms of controls (this is coming from a speedrunner that plays the original so take that with a grain of salt), there’s the new switch release that comes in the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection (the BLJ is patched though in this version) there’s the emulated version on pc using Project64 or other methods (probably the easiest to setup, just search up a good guide for it and your set), and finally the PC port which is objectively the best version since it can support 1080p 60fps with widescreen, it has mods that change textures, models, and other stuff, and has multiple controller options including Xbox And PlayStation controllers. COMING FROM 2020, SUPER MARIO 3D ALL STARS BABY Comment by pharell. The best way to play it imo is on an original N64 with a crt, but there’s plenty of other ways to play it if you don’t have an n64. It’s a little hard to get into since it’s controls aren’t the best for casual play and it’s aged quite a bit, but it’s still a fun platformer to play.
